Landscaping
Josh Kress started Edelweiss Lawn & Garden in 2020 with Jobber and a one-person operation. Today he leads a team of 18 across irrigation, lawn care, maintenance, and construction, serving resorts and homes in the Vail Valley. Here’s why he moved to LMN, and what changed once he did.
Edelweiss Lawn & Garden at a Glance
“It’s given me the opportunity to operate the business instead of keeping up with the operation of the business.”Josh Kress, Owner, Edelweiss Lawn & Garden
“It’s given me the opportunity to operate the business instead of keeping up with the operation of the business.”
Before Josh had a single employee, he was juggling spreadsheets and billing out of QuickBooks. He wanted one place to keep it all straight. Jobber gave him that.
“The question was, do you have an offering that will connect to all of the different technologies I’m using and keep it tight? And it did a good job at that. If I’d send an invoice from Jobber, it would trail right through to my QuickBooks.”
It worked well for a solo operator. Then the crews came.
“It was an answer to a question that I had, but it wasn’t really what we needed once we started adding crews, at least for the way that we operate.”
Edelweiss works in a mountain community, where a dropped signal is an expected part of the job. That’s where the cracks showed first.
“Cell service was a challenge. I was constantly running into the issue where I wasn’t actually collecting data. Once there were a few crews having the same issue, we’d have been better off on pen and paper.”
Estimating was the other gap. Josh couldn’t build an estimate inside Jobber, so every quote started in a Word document.
“I couldn’t estimate inside of it, which I didn’t realize the value of until I really built out my estimating templates in LMN. I’d produce an estimate and come up with a way to present it, often just a Word document I’d created as a template. Building estimates outside the software took a lot of time to get right.”
Josh also felt the difference between a tool built for dozens of trades and one built for landscaping. He’s quick to say Jobber has its place: “I think it’s really great for smaller individuals that have a real strong pulse on their business and are just trying to be more organized.” But for a growing landscape company, he found himself fitting his business to the software.
“It’s a tool built for a lot of trades. As we grew, I wanted one built around how a landscape company actually runs.”
The tipping point came when the properties that required the most data were the ones where data was getting lost.
“It pushed me really hard. I thought, I can’t keep doing it this way. What else can we use?”
Josh had actually looked at LMN when he first picked Jobber. At the time, he ran high-end residential garden maintenance, and LMN looked like it was built for a much bigger company.
“I thought, that’s for somebody much larger. I wasn’t thinking I was going to grow into it, and here we are.”
This time he compared options before committing. He sat through demos of other platforms and talked with peers who use them. Pricing made the difference.
“I was much more in line with the monthly user pricing from LMN. It just seemed more transparent.”
He also knew going in that LMN would take real work to set up. With a small admin team, that work would land on him.
“It seemed like a real dedicated process, and it was going to land on me. I’m glad it did.”
His onboarding specialist helped him get there. “John was a fantastic person to help set this up.”
Offline mode in the LMN Crew App solved the problem that started it all.
“Offline mode was the deal-breaker for us. In the mountains, the app has to work without signal, and LMN’s does. I love it. It’s really fantastic for that.”
Then came the data.
“With just the timesheet tracking and photos, that one section, I can gather more data there than I could from any and all areas in Jobber combined. That’s where the real power has come from now that our team is using the app properly and everybody understands the process.”
That clarity changed how Edelweiss runs its crews. Josh wanted his crew leaders fully focused on the property and the client, not on the phone. So he reworked the crew structure.
“We’ve actually switched our org chart because of LMN. Historically, the crew leader has always managed all aspects of the crew. Now we have a pilot and a copilot. The copilot is next in line to become a crew leader, and they’re managing the phone and communicating with the staff in between job sites about what’s to come. That allows the crew leader to operate and communicate without running the phone.”
The change did more than tidy up appearances. It created a new step on the career ladder for his team.
“The ultimate goal is always to elevate everybody’s position. If we can always have our team elevating, they’re going to want to stick around. So we saw it as an opportunity to create another position.”
Josh still collects the site data himself. But because Edelweiss has built out its estimating templates in LMN, the rest no longer depends on him. His operations leader or office administrator can enter the square footage and quantities, and Josh can review in a minute.
“If I’m somehow unavailable but we need to get this turned around, I can get on the phone with either our office administrator or our operations leader and they both have full access. It’s all square footage and measurements that have been built out. I do a quick review to confirm they’ve got the data, and it can go out.”
“If it took an hour before, it’s probably five minutes now.”Josh Kress
“If it took an hour before, it’s probably five minutes now.”
Most of Edelweiss’s growth now comes from commercial accounts. When Josh takes over a contract from another provider, he can sit down with the client at the end of the season and show them exactly where the hours went.
“I can go in there and plain as day say, we were over this percent on shrub pruning or mowing or whatever service we’re discussing. It’s rock solid. I can confidently say that’s what it took to do the task. And having that confidence isn’t something I used to get out of Jobber.”
With LMN, Josh trusts the hours nearly all the time, and that’s changed what he’s willing to bid.
“Now I’m about 99% confident in our hours, and it’s allowed me to bid projects in a new way that I previously couldn’t.”
Josh has already had the conversation about switching from Jobber to LMN with three peers. He starts by asking how they use Jobber today, and he’s clear about where he lands.
“I feel confident that there isn’t a single area that isn’t an improvement if you’re a landscaper on Jobber switching to LMN.”
Josh’s goal for 2027 is a milestone every owner knows: a team strong enough to win new clients on its own, so every client gets the Edelweiss standard whether or not Josh made the first call. The vision behind it hasn’t changed.
“The vision is still the same: to provide the highest level of landscape maintenance service in the Valley.”
That goal rests on the shift that began in December: estimates no longer wait on Josh, crew members have a path to crew leader, and bids are built on hours he trusts. As larger, private equity-backed companies move into the market, being family-owned and local is Edelweiss’s edge. Clients can reach the people running their properties. LMN gives Josh’s team the process to deliver on that promise as it grows.
LMN is made for landscape operators, so your setup fits your business, not the other way around. Talk with our team about what that looks like for you.
