Troy Clogg Landscape Associates (TCLA) has been designing, building, and caring for properties across Southeast Michigan since 1985. Today, the company serves residential and commercial clients through design/build, maintenance, fertilization, and irrigation, and keeps commercial properties safe through Michigan winters with snow and ice management. Along the way, TCLA has earned dozens of awards for design, construction, maintenance, and environmental improvements.
With $17M in annual revenue and a team that grows from approximately 85 during the green season to 140 in winter, TCLA has developed a substantial operation. But its leaders say the priorities that shaped the business from the beginning remain the same: how the team treats its clients, one another, and the community.
Three things set TCLA apart from a typical landscape company.
Snow is the larger half of the business. More than half of TCLA’s business comes from snow and ice management, which may differ from many landscape companies. The team develops detailed response plans for every site and every weather/time/day scenario. Within those plans, LMN is used to capture labor and material activity for job costing and operational review. Contracts vary too, including per-push, all-inclusive, capped, and more. Each one needs to be priced, managed, and tracked differently.
They own their supply yard. Direct access to materials gives TCLA control over what shows up on a job and when.
They buy equipment with very little debt and run it longer. Troy is passionate about buying equipment with a plan. Keeping equipment in service longer means TCLA carries high equity in its assets.
Snow season means managing bulk salt, Hot Pink de-icer, and bagged products across multiple storage locations and job sites. With teams working throughout the winter, TCLA needs to understand material usage, replenishment needs, and available storage capacity, particularly during major storms and periods of supply disruption.
“Keeping accurate inventory during snow season is a crucial element of our job. Inventory = cash, and you should look after and manage your inventory the way you would your cash,” says Troy Clogg, founder of Troy Clogg Landscape Associates.
TCLA’s answer is to make LMN the record of every snow event.
At the site. After every application, crews log the amount of material used directly in LMN, along with timestamps and before and after photos of the site.
Across every location. That gives the team real-time visibility into usage at every location. They know exactly what was used, where there’s capacity to store more, and what product needs to be restocked or moved before the next event.
Because TCLA is ISO certified, those detailed logs also keep the company compliant. They double as documented proof of service that protects against potential slip-and-fall litigation.
LMN is where TCLA tracks the time and materials behind the work:
Since implementing LMN in 2014, TCLA has continued refining the systems and processes that support its operations. The technology provides visibility into labor, materials, equipment, and job performance, but the company’s success is ultimately driven by the people who use that information to make better decisions, improve efficiency, and deliver consistent service.
Greg Counsell, the company’s longest-tenured team member, has been with TCLA since the beginning. Other employees have built careers with the business since the 1990s and early 2000s, and average tenure is approximately 10 years.
“Experienced people train the next generation, protect our standards, and give our clients consistency year after year,” says Troy Clogg.
TCLA wanted in on the tour because opening the doors is part of how the company operates.
“We believe in opening our doors to the industry and learning from one another,” says Troy Clogg. “Sharing what’s worked (and what hasn’t) is part of who we are.” Building up the next generation of people in the industry is a passion of his.
What they hope attendees take away is proof that a landscape company can grow to this size and still run on a people-first culture. “Our goal is to help improve the lives of our clients, our team members, and our communities.”
Day One, led by Sam Gembel, walks attendees through the numbers, pricing, and systems behind a profitable landscape business, and you leave with a written 90-day plan. Day Two, led by Brian Fullerton, moves inside TCLA’s operation to see those systems running live, with rotating stations across yard, fleet, crew, estimating, sales, and culture.
Spend two days with operators who’ve built the numbers, the systems, and the accountability behind real growth, then walk through a business running exactly those principles.
